From Hate to Understanding: An International Experience in Romania

Representatives of the association Ārpus burbuļa took part in the Erasmus+ youth mobility project "From Hate to Understanding", which took place in Sfântu Gheorghe, Romania, in April 2026. Participation in the project was carried out in cooperation with the organization "Laust robežas".

This project was not only about theory or discussions – it was an intensive experience that encouraged participants to look deeper into socially relevant issues.

Young people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds came together, creating an environment where everyone could both share their perspectives and challenge their own assumptions. From the very first days, it became clear how strongly our perception is influenced by stereotypes, assumptions, and information that we often overlook in our daily lives.

During the program, participants:

  • analyzed manifestations of hate speech and its impact on society
  • explored the role of social media and disinformation in shaping opinions
  • took part in role plays and simulations, developing argumentation and critical thinking skills
  • discussed social inequality, prejudice, and discrimination
  • worked in intercultural teams, learning to cooperate and embrace diversity

A particularly valuable aspect was the opportunity to experience firsthand how first impressions are formed and how easily they can be misleading. Many activities highlighted the importance of not only listening, but truly hearing others.

Throughout the project, participants developed not only knowledge but also essential skills – communication, empathy, argumentation, and the ability to view situations from multiple perspectives. It was an opportunity to step outside of one's usual "bubble" and connect with people whose experiences differ significantly from our own.

This experience once again confirmed that although we are different, it is precisely this diversity that makes us stronger. Only through understanding, dialogue, and cooperation can we build an inclusive and respectful society.

The association Ārpus burbuļa plans to apply the knowledge and experience gained in its future work in Latvia by developing activities and initiatives that promote critical thinking, social cohesion, and understanding of diversity.
